Don't Overlook These Factors When Choosing Plastic Decking Material

In a commercial facility, plastic decking material is a good choice as it's typically stronger than wood but more affordable than steel or other metals; it also resists rot and insect infestation, both of which are very common in commercial locations. Fiberglass reinforced plastic, or FRP, is durable but lightweight and a favorite choice for many commercial facility owners for decking, bridges, and the like. When you need to choose an FRP surface for your facility, note a few factors to consider so you know you get the right material and design and don't overlook any details.

Heat resistance

If your commercial facility uses welding equipment or any other such high-heat applications, you need to note the heat resistance of an FRP deck. Note, too, that heat may be a factor if you choose decking for any type of garage or warehouse facility that will have trucks drive over, especially if they park on the deck with their engine running. The heat from the engine and exhaust, especially from larger trucks that may run hotter than other vehicles, may damage a plastic deck without a high heat tolerance.

Ventilation and mesh size

Most FRP decks will be made with a honeycomb cutout design; this can help with ventilation and also may add traction, something needed for second-floor decks or bridges. When choosing a mesh or honeycomb, be sure you note the size of opening and if there is a risk of tools and small parts being dropped on the deck or bridge; if they should fall through the mesh, this can be a hazard for those below. Balance your need for ventilation above a bridge or deck with the size of mesh needed to keep workers safe and not risk losing tools or parts.

UV resistance

Not all plastics and fiberglass are UV resistant; the sun's rays may fade and damage the plastic itself, cause its color to change, and may also cause the chemical makeup of the plastic to break down as well. It may then soften and warp. If your decking will be outside or exposed to harsh, direct sunlight, you need to consider the UV resistance of the material. For inside decking, this may not be an issue but don't assume that any outside decking will be able to resist this damage from sunlight. You may need a special coating for the material to keep it in shape and provide it the protection it needs.
