Important Safety Precautions For Your Commercial Property

Posted on

When you manage commercial property, you know that the safety and security of your employees is top-priority. Here are some safety precautions to take in order to ensure your building property, the contents and anyone in your building remain safe at all times.

Check Your Fire and Smoke Alarms

Not only do you need to have fire and smoke alarms installed in the building, but you need to make sure they are inspected and maintained on a regular basis. This involves testing them to make sure they work properly and having a professional fire alarm company, such as SPS Fire and Safety, come out on a routine basis to inspect their function. If you notice that the fire alarm does not go off when it should, fixing it is not something you should put off. Call someone immediately to have it looked at. Commercial buildings should also have a sprinkler system just in case of a fire. Have fire extinguishers on every floor and train employees how to use them.

Get Proper Lighting

There needs to be plenty of lighting in and out of your building for safety purposes. When your employees are arriving early in the morning or leaving late at night, you don't want them to have a fall hazard just because there aren't enough exterior lights. Having better lighting, especially outdoors, can also help to deter criminals. Burglars don't want to be caught, so the last thing they want to do is attempt to break into a building that is lit up all night. You can also get lights with motion detectors to save energy, so that they only turn on when someone is in the vicinity.

Have an Evacuation Plan

Emergencies do happen on occasion, so it is best that you are prepared for them. Develop proper evacuation plans for different types of emergencies, such as flood, fire, earthquake, tornado, and anything else that is possible in your area. You might be more prone to fires and earthquakes, so you know these are the natural disasters to prepare for. Make sure all employees know where they need to evacuate, including what stairs are closest to them to avoid the elevator and where the nearest exit doors are. Run fire drills to make sure everyone knows what to do.

Check the Floors for Slip Risks

Slips and falls are among the more common incidents that occur in commercial buildings. To reduce the risk, ensure tile and hard floors are not slippery and use rubber mats that don't slide around. Also, look for any holes or damage to the floors as that can also become a slip hazard.
